OMP chairman admits failing acid test of Vanni protesters

[TamilNet, Monday, 04 June 2018, 21:35 GMT]
The Office of Mission Persons (OMP) Chairman and President's Counsel Saliya Pieris has regretted to the protesting families in Mullaiththevu admitting that he could not secure any list of those who were handed over to the SL military by the families of former LTTE members in Vanni during the final hours of the genocidal war in 2009.

The SL military commanders do not have any such list, Saliya has told the representatives of the enforced disappeared in Mullaiththeevu.

The protesting families on Saturday came with two conditions to test the sincerity of the OMP. The OMP should at least fulfil one them the protesters had said.

The other test was about producing 100 people subjected to enforced disappearance live to the public.

While the OMP is yet to take any step in that direction, informed sources told TamilNet that the Colombo regime is hurriedly preparing a list of entries of missing persons based on the complaints it had received through the LLRC Commission of Rajapaksa times.

The aim of composing such list is two-fold, they said.

Firstly, it would put the figures very low making the issue relatively insignificant equating these with the numbers of the SL military personnel who were missing in action during the war.

Secondly, by issuing such list, the SL State would attempt to present it as some progress to the Geneva-based consensus resolution and seek to buy more time, they said.
