Colombo’s ‘development’ crime evicts one-third of resettled Tamils from border village in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 23 January 2018, 16:49 GMT]
Almost one third of resettled Tamil families in the village of Oamadiyaa-madu village, located near the district border of Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa in the East, have displaced in recent months from their village due to the ‘development’ crimes committed against them by the occupying Colombo. This post-war displacement is caused by systematic deprivation of infrastructure and intentional neglect in the restoration of their livelihood by the central ministries and authorities of the unitary State system of genocidal Sri Lanka. The SL Ministry of so-called Mahaweli ‘Development’ is working behind the scene to Sinhalicise the entire area, Tamil civil sources in Batticaloa said.

In the meantime, occupying Sinhala settlers have gained infrastructure and livelihood assistance from all the central ministries in Colombo, the sources further said.

Tamil-speaking Muslims with political connections with the Colombo Establishment have also gained some advantage over the resettled Tamils.

The resettled families lack basic facilities such as access to potable water and medical facilities.

The nearest base hospital is at 7 km distance from Oamadiyaa-madu at Rithi-thenna, a Sinhala village. Vaazhaich-cheanai hospital is located 50 km away.

The Tamil school has been moved closer to Sinhala settler area.

The roads in Oamadiyaa-madu have been neglected to the level that even bicycle riding has become a difficult task.

Tamil families have also been discriminated in housing assistance.

Sinhala farmers from nearby settlement of Jayanthiyaya are also diverting the water coming from the Mahaweli irrigation scheme.

Omadiyaa-madu village is located 58 km north of Batticaloa city and 10 km north of Welikanda, a bordering Sinhala town in the Polonnaruwa district.

The Tamil people of Oamadiyaa-madu, with a self-sustained economy, were uprooted in 1990 facing assaults from Sinhala military and the so-called [Sinhala] home-guards paramilitary operated by it.

Around 350 Tamil families resettled in Oamadiyaa-madu on their own effort since 2008.

Now, almost 100 of these families have left the village due to the lack of infrastructure and livelihood.

The village comes under Koa'ra'laip-pattu North of Batticaloa district. But, SL Survey Department officials marked it as coming under Polonnaruwa district in an irrigation survey some time back Their intention was to absorb the village as the catchment area of an irrigation tank being renovated under the Mahaweli system in the Polonnaruwa district.

SL President Maithiripala Sirisena, who has been in charge of Mahaweli ‘development’ for several periods since 1997, hails from Polonnaruwa district.
